Bikepacking Morocco is one of the great adventures — but it demands more planning than a supported tour. Here’s what we’ve learned running trips here for years.
The Ounila Valley, the Draa, and the Atlantic coast are the most self-sufficient-friendly routes — villages, water and food are never too far apart. The high passes are harder: long, empty and weather-dependent.
Carry 2–3 L minimum and plan refills around villages. In the desert, double that. A filter is useful but village tap water is generally safe; we still recommend treatment.
Wild camping is widely accepted and easy in the desert and mountains. Guesthouses are cheap and frequent in the valleys — a hybrid approach (some nights inside, some out) is the sweet spot.
Spring and autumn. Avoid summer desert and winter high passes. Start early, ride through the middle of the day only in cool seasons.
