Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to cycle the Sahara?

October to March. Cool days and cold nights make the desert rideable and the camping unforgettable. From May the desert is dangerously hot and we do not run trips there.

Can you really ride a gravel bike on sand?

Yes, on the compacted desert pistes. The Erg Chebbi and Draa fringes are mostly firm piste rideable on 40–45c tyres. Short soft-sand sections are walkable; we route around the deep dunes.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy to moderate effort, but the days are long and exposed. You should be comfortable riding 70–100 km on consecutive days. Heat and wind matter more than climbing — we start early and carry ample water.

What accommodation is there in the desert?

Desert guesthouses and kasbahs in the oasis towns, plus a bivouac desert camp near the dunes for the classic night under the stars. Premium tiers use the best lodges and camps.

How do I get to the Sahara?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is about 560 km / 8 hours from Marrakech — usually reached as the climax of a multi-day expedition crossing the Atlas. M’Hamid (Erg Chigaga) is reached via the Draa. Transfers are included on expeditions.

Is it safe to cycle in the Sahara?

Yes, with a guide and support. The desert is remote and exposed, so we carry ample water, use a support vehicle, and ride in the cool hours. Our guides know the pistes and the water stops.

What should I pack for a desert trip?

Sun protection, layered clothing (hot days, cold nights), a warm layer for the camp, tubeless tyres with sealant, and at least 2–3 L of water capacity. See our Sahara preparation guide.

Can I customise a Sahara trip?

Yes. The Sahara is usually the finale of an Atlas-to-Sahara expedition, but we can build custom itineraries combining the Draa, Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga with other regions.
