The Todra Valley — A Gravel Cycling Guide
The Todra Valley runs east of Ouarzazate to the Todra Gorge near Tinghir — a river corridor of palm groves and villages that narrows into sheer canyon walls rising from the river. It is the natural twin of the Dades, and together they form the great canyon-country loop of southern Morocco.
The valley
The Todra river runs from the Atlas down to Tinghir, watering a corridor of palm groves, gardens and Berber villages before narrowing into the Todra Gorge — a slot canyon with near-vertical walls rising tens of metres from the riverbed. The gorge is one of the most dramatic geological features in southern Morocco and a famed rock-climbing destination; for cyclists, the valley approaches and the gorge road are the riding.
The riding
The signature ride is the Todra Canyon Ride dossier — valley pistes and the gorge approach. The Todra pairs with the Dades for a canyon loop: the Dades to Todra Overnight and the Ounila, Dades & Todra Expedition both combine them.
Difficulty and surface
Moderate. The valley floor is rolling and rideable; the gorge is a short, dramatic walled section. The surface is compacted valley gravel and piste, with the gorge road partly paved. 40c tyres are right for the valley pistes.
