How to Plan Your First Morocco Gravel Trip

Planning your first Morocco gravel trip comes down to a few decisions made in the right order: where, when, how long, and how supported. This is the beginner planning walkthrough — the same one we give every first enquiry, built from running these routes for years.

The decision order

Planning a first trip is not complicated, but the order matters. Get the region-and-season decision right first, then layer on duration, support, fitness and equipment. Everything else is detail. This is the walkthrough we give every first enquiry.

Step 1 — Choose region and season

This is the biggest decision. Spring and autumn for the High Atlas and Sahara; winter for the desert, Anti-Atlas and coast; summer only for the high Atlas at dawn. If you are fixed on dates, pick the region that works for them. Read the best time guide.

Step 2 — Choose duration

For a first trip, start small. A day ride or two from Marrakech is the taster; a 2-day overnight adds the mountain night; the 5-Day Atlas Gravel Tour is the best first multi-day. Read how many days do you need.

Step 3 — Supported or independent

For a first multi-day, supported is the right call — the vehicle carries water and luggage, the guide navigates and makes weather calls, and you ride light. Bikepacking is for when you know the country. Read self-guided vs guided.

Step 4 — The bike

You do not need to bring one. We rent well-equipped gravel bikes in Marrakech — tubeless-ready, low gearing, hydraulic discs. If you bring your own, we help with assembly and box storage. Read gravel bike rental in Morocco and bringing your own bike.

Step 5 — Fitness

For day rides, comfortable with 40–60 km and 300–600 m of gain. For the 5-Day Atlas Tour, 60–80 km with 1,000 m+ on consecutive days. Read how difficult is gravel cycling in Morocco for the benchmarks.

Step 6 — Logistics

Fly into Marrakech Menara (RAK). On supported tours, airport transfers, bike assembly, transfers to the start and back from the finish are included. For independent riders, Marrakech is the hub for buses and grand taxis. Read the full planning guide.
