The Ourika is the river valley that climbs south from Marrakech into the Atlas — a gradual ascent through Berber villages, terraced gardens and riverside pistes to the higher ground. It is a popular, scenic moderate day ride, and a gateway toward Imlil and the Toubkal massif.
The Ourika river runs south from the Haouz plain up into the Atlas, and the valley is one of the most accessible mountain corridors from Marrakech. The lower valley is broad and cultivated; higher up it narrows into gorges and Berber villages clinging to the slopes. The river runs alongside much of the riding, which makes it a cooler, greener day than the drier foothills.
The signature ride is the Ourika Valley Gravel dossier — a gradual climb up the valley on riverside piste and village tracks. The valley is the approach route for riders heading toward Imlil and the Toubkal massif; the 5-Day Atlas Gravel Tour descends through the Ourika on its way back to Marrakech.
Moderate. The climb is gradual rather than steep — a steady gain up the valley — but it adds up. Comfortable with 50–60 km and 500–700 m of climbing. The surface is firm riverside piste and village tracks; 40c tyres are right.
Spring and autumn are best — the river is full, the valley is green, and the temperature is manageable. Summer is hot but the riverside is cooler than the open plains; ride early. Winter is cold in the upper valley. Carry 2 L; villages and tea stops are frequent along the Ourika.
The Ourika is the launch point for higher objectives. Toward the head of the valley you can climb toward Imlil and the Toubkal massif. For a multi-day, the Marrakech to Atlas Foothills Overnight uses the Ourika corridor.
The lower valley starts about 30 km south of the city — a 40-minute transfer to a ride start. The full valley climbs well into the Atlas.
Moderate — a gradual climb rather than a steep one, but the gain adds up. Comfortable with 50–60 km and 500–700 m of climbing.
The main road up the valley can be busy on weekends and holidays, but the gravel pistes and village tracks we ride are quiet. The riverside riding is the appeal.
Yes — the Ourika is a gateway toward Imlil and the Toubkal massif. It is a longer, higher day and features on the 5-Day Atlas Gravel Tour.
