Ouirgane — A Gravel Cycling Guide

Ouirgane is the red-earth valley at the gateway to the Tizi n’Test — olive groves, Berber villages and quiet pistes at around 1,200 m, an hour south of Marrakech. It is the most scenic of the moderate Marrakech day rides, and the natural launch point for the high-pass approaches.

The valley

Ouirgane lies in the N’fis valley at about 1,200 m, where the Marrakech foothills climb toward the Tizi n’Test pass. The valley is red earth, olive groves and terraced fields, with the Atlas rising on every side. It is quieter than the Ourika and more scenic than the lower foothills — a proper mountain-valley feel within reach of the city.

The riding

The signature ride is the Ouirgane Valley Ride — rolling pistes through the valley and villages. For a harder day, the Tizi n’Test Loop climbs toward the pass itself. And the full Tizi n’Test Approach route (62 km, 1,300 m) runs from Ouirgane up to the 2,092 m pass — one of the two great Atlas gravel corridors.

Difficulty and fitness

Moderate for the valley ride; challenging for the pass approach. The valley rolls at 1,000–1,200 m; the pass climb adds 1,300 m of gain to over 2,000 m. Match the option to your fitness and the weather — the pass is weather-dependent.

Spring and autumn are ideal. At 1,200 m the valley is rideable through winter, though mornings are cold. The Tizi n’Test pass (2,092 m) is snowed in through winter and only rideable May–October. In summer the valley is warm but the pass climb, done early, is one of the cooler big rides.
