Winter riding in the Draa Valley palm oasis, southern Morocco

Morocco Gravel Cycling in Winter

Winter is the desert and coast season in Morocco. While the high passes are snowed in, the Sahara, the Anti-Atlas and the Atlantic coast are at their prime — mild days, cold nights, firm pistes. If you want to ride when Europe is frozen, winter is the Moroccan window.

Why winter works

Winter is the warm-season window for Morocco. The high passes are snowed in, but the desert, the Anti-Atlas and the Atlantic coast are at their best — mild days, firm pistes, and cold, star-filled nights. It is the escape from the European winter: a short flight to riding that is comfortable when home is frozen.

Where to ride in winter

Conditions

Mild days (16–22°C in the desert and coast), cold nights — near freezing in the desert and the Anti-Atlas, where it can drop below 0°C. The pistes are firm after the winter rains. The high passes (Tizi n’Tichka, Tizi n’Test) are closed by snow. The weather is generally stable; winter storms can bring rain to the low country.

What to pack

Tours in winter

The desert and coast are the winter objectives. The Draa Valley to Sahara Edge expedition and the Anti-Atlas to Agadir expedition run in the winter window. The Atlas to Sahara Grand Tour does not — the high pass is closed. Read the best time guide.
