M’Hamid — A Gravel Cycling Guide

M’Hamid is where the road ends and the sand begins — the last settlement on the Draa, where the river disappears into the desert and the pistes run out toward the Erg Chigaga dunes. It is the deep-desert endpoint of the Draa corridor, and the place where gravel riding becomes pure desert adventure.

The place

M’Hamid (M’Hamid El Ghizlane) is the last settlement on the Draa river, where the road ends and the desert begins. The river, which has run south from Ouarzazate through Agdz and Zagora, finally disappears into the sand here. Beyond M’Hamid, the pistes run west toward the Erg Chigaga dunes — some 50–60 km of empty hamada and sand. It is the deep-desert endpoint of the Draa corridor.

The riding

The riding around M’Hamid is pure desert — sandier and emptier than the Draa corridor to the north. The Sahara Edge Ride and the Sahara Edge Adventure overnight sample the desert edge. Difficulty and surface

Moderate to challenging. The pistes are rideable but sandier than the Draa corridor; 45c tyres help in the soft sections. The discipline is water, navigation and heat — beyond M’Hamid the desert is empty, with no services and no shade. A support vehicle is essential for the deeper desert.
