Merzouga — A Gravel Cycling Guide
Merzouga is the desert-edge town at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes — the great 28 km arc of sand that is the most accessible of Morocco’s dune fields. For cyclists it is the grand finale of the Atlas to Sahara Grand Tour, and the base for riding the dune-edge pistes and sleeping in a desert camp under a sky with no light pollution.
The town
Merzouga is a small desert town in southeastern Morocco, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The dunes run for about 28 km in an arc, reaching up to 150 m, and they are the most accessible of Morocco’s great ergs — you can reach the sand from the town in minutes. Merzouga has hotels, desert camps and camel-trek operators; it is the tourist hub of the southeastern desert.
The riding
The riding around Merzouga is dune-edge piste — compacted desert gravel along the Erg Chebbi fringe, with short sandy sections where the sand encroaches. The Sahara Edge Ride samples the desert edge. Difficulty and surface
Moderate. The dune-edge pistes are rideable but sandier than the Draa corridor; 45c tyres help in the soft sections. The discipline is heat, water and navigation — the dune-edge is empty and exposed. A support vehicle is recommended.
