The Kik Plateau — A Gravel Cycling Guide

The Kik Plateau is the high rolling tableland above Lalla Takerkoust — a broad, open expanse of gravel and pasture with the full wall of the Atlas, and Toubkal’s summit, laid out to the south. It is the most rewarding moderate day ride from Marrakech, and the point where the foothills become real mountains.

The plateau

The Kik Plateau sits above the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir, a broad tableland of rolling gravel, pasture and scattered Berber villages, with the Atlas wall rising directly to the south and Toubkal (4,167 m) visible on a clear day. The climb up from the lake is the work; the plateau itself is fast, open and spectacular.

The riding

The signature ride is the Kik Plateau Adventure — a climb from the lake onto the plateau, then rolling gravel across the top with the Atlas on the skyline. It is moderate: a sustained climb up, fast rolling across the plateau, and a long descent back. The surface is firm earth and gravel; 40c tyres are right.

Moderate. The climb onto the plateau is the crux — several hundred metres of gain at a steady gradient. You want to be comfortable with 50–60 km and 600–800 m of climbing. The plateau top is fast and rolling; the reward is the views and the descent.

Season

Spring and autumn are prime — the plateau is green, the air is clear, and Toubkal shows its snow. Winter can bring snow to the plateau itself, so check conditions; the climb up from the lake is usually fine. Summer is hot and exposed — ride very early, as there is no shade on the top.

Water and support

Carry 2–3 L — the plateau is open and exposed with few stops. A support vehicle is useful for water and as a bailout on the climb. The plateau links naturally to the Ouirgane valley for a longer day or an overnight.
