Why Marrakech works as a gravel base
Marrakech (around 466 m elevation) sits on the Haouz plain with the High Atlas wall rising immediately to the south. That geography is what makes it work: the foothills begin within 30–40 km of the city centre, and the gravel pistes above Amizmiz, Asni, Ouirgane and the Ourika valley climb from there. You can ride a genuinely good day ride without an overnight, and you can start a multi-day Atlas crossing from the same base.

The Marrakech region sorts into three bands, each a step higher and harder than the last:
