Gravel Cycling Around Imlil — A Guide
Imlil (1,800 m) is the gateway to Mount Toubkal and the highest of the Marrakech foothill bases — a stone village in the foothills where the pistes turn from rolling valley gravel into real mountain riding. The village
Imlil is a Berber village at about 1,800 m in the Reraya valley, the main gateway for trekkers climbing Toubkal (4,167 m). For cyclists it is the highest practical base on the Marrakech side of the Atlas — the point where the foothill valleys narrow and the pistes climb toward the high ground. The village has guesthouses, cafés and a busy trekking scene, but the gravel above and around it is quiet.
The riding
The riding around Imlil is the transition zone — rolling pistes up the valley from Asni, then steeper, rockier climbing toward the higher villages and the Toubkal massif. The Asni Loop rolls through the valley below Imlil; the 5-Day Atlas Gravel Tour climbs toward Imlil on day two and descends through the Ourika on day three.
Difficulty and altitude
Moderate to challenging. At 1,800 m the air is noticeably thinner than Marrakech, and the climbing above the village is sustained. You want to be comfortable with 50–60 km and 700–1,000 m of climbing, and acclimatised to the altitude. The pistes are firm but stonier than the lower foothills; 40c tyres are right.
