Erg Chigaga is a field of dunes in the deep desert west of M’Hamid, about 50–60 km beyond the end of the road. Unlike the accessible Erg Chebbi, Chigaga is remote — you reach it across empty hamada (stone desert) and sand, with no settlements on the way. It is the wilder, less-visited erg, and the deep-desert objective for riders who want the Sahara at its most empty.
The riding
The riding to Erg Chigaga is the empty hamada and sand piste from M’Hamid — 50–60 km of featureless desert, navigated by GPS. The surface is compacted hamada gravel with sandy sections; 45c tyres help. It is expedition territory, not a day ride. A support vehicle is essential — there is no water, no shade and no bailout beyond M’Hamid.
Difficulty and surface
Challenging. The distance, the heat, the sand, the navigation and the total emptiness add up. The pistes are rideable but sandier than the Draa corridor. You need 4–5 L water minimum, a GPS track, a support vehicle, and a confirmed weather window. This is the deepest riding in the Moroccan catalogue.
