The Dades Valley — A Gravel Cycling Guide
The Dades Valley is canyon country east of Ouarzazate — red-rock walls, fingers of stone, and a river corridor of palm groves and kasbahs that climbs to the dramatic Dades Gorge. It is one of the most photogenic gravel regions in Morocco, and a natural pairing with the Todra for a canyon-country loop.
The valley
The Dades river runs east from the Atlas toward Ouarzazate, carving a valley of red rock, palm groves and old kasbahs. The upper valley narrows into the Dades Gorge — sheer walls, switchback roads and some of the most dramatic scenery in southern Morocco. The valley is part of the “Route of the Kasbahs” and sits between the Atlas and the Jebel Sahro.
The riding
The signature ride is the Dades Valley Gravel dossier — valley-floor pistes through the palm groves and kasbahs, with the option to climb toward the gorge. The Dades pairs naturally with the Todra for a canyon-country loop. It is featured in the Dades to Todra Overnight and the Ounila, Dades & Todra Expedition.
Difficulty and surface
Moderate. The valley floor is rolling and rideable; the climb toward the gorge adds gradient and stonier ground. The surface is compacted valley gravel and piste, with some rocky sections in the gorge. 40c tyres are right; 45c if you are climbing into the upper gorge.

Access and staying over
Access is from Ouarzazate or Boumalne Dades, about 2 hours east of Ouarzazate. The valley has numerous guesthouses and kasbah-stays, especially around Boumalne and the gorge. It is a natural overnight on a southern loop — pair it with the Todra via the Dades to Todra Overnight.
