Tyre width is the single biggest comfort and capability choice on a Moroccan gravel trip. Too narrow and the sandy sections and piste chatter beat you up; too wide and the long tarmac links feel sluggish. Here is how to choose, based on the actual surfaces you will ride.
Moroccan gravel is mostly compacted earth piste — firm and fast. The variables are sand (approaching the Sahara and in dry riverbeds), loose gravel on the high passes, and stony canyon floors in the Dades and Todra. There is little singletrack on our routes. See terrain and surfaces explained.
A 40–45c tubeless tyre at moderate pressure handles 90% of Moroccan pistes comfortably. It floats over the small stuff, grips the loose pass gravel, and still rolls on the tarmac links between valleys. Most modern gravel bikes clear this with room for mud. This is what we ride and what our rental fleet runs.
45–50c earns its keep on desert days and loaded bikepacking, where the extra air volume softens sandy sections and long rough pistes with weight on the bike. The Sahara cycling guide and desert bikepacking guide are where wider tyres pay off most.
38–40c is plenty on the firm valley pistes of the Draa loop and the Ounila, especially on a supported trip where you ride light. The trade-off is a harsher ride on the stony sections — manageable for a day, tiring over a week.
Tubeless lets you run lower pressure without pinch flats, which is what makes wider tyres work on rough pistes. It also self-seals the thorn punctures that are the most common flat in Morocco. Read tubeless vs tubes.
40–45c tubeless is the sweet spot — comfortable and capable across firm pistes, loose pass gravel and the sandy approaches to the desert. Go wider (45–50c) for desert and loaded bikepacking.
Not necessarily. 45c at lower pressure handles most Sahara pistes. 50c helps on the softest sand and on loaded bikepacking, but adds drag on the tarmac links.
Around 2.2–2.5 bar for a mid-weight rider on 42c tubeless. Drop 0.2–0.3 bar for sandy or wet sections. The goal is the lowest pressure that does not bottom out on rim strikes.
Strongly recommended. Thorns and sharp piste stones cause most flats, and tubeless sealant handles the majority. Carry a plug kit and one spare tube as backup.
