Gravel climbing in the Atlas in prime spring conditions, Morocco

The Best Time for Gravel Cycling in Morocco

Morocco is rideable most of the year — you just move with the seasons. The single biggest planning decision is matching region to month: the High Atlas in spring and autumn, the desert and coast in winter, the high country in summer. This is the seasonal framework we use to plan every trip.

The seasonal framework

Morocco’s riding season is long because the country spans alpine, desert and coast — you move with the weather rather than waiting for one narrow window. The framework is simple: Atlas and Sahara in spring and autumn, desert and coast in winter, high Atlas only in summer. Get this one decision right and the rest of the planning follows.

Spring (March–May)

Prime. The snow clears from the high passes, the foothills green up, and the weather stabilises. The High Atlas passes (Tizi n’Tichka, Tizi n’Test) open up; the Sahara is mild before the heat builds. The best all-round month. Read Morocco gravel cycling in spring.

Autumn (September–November)

Equal to spring. The heat eases, the light is at its best, and the high passes are still clear. September can still be hot in the desert; October–November is golden. Read Morocco gravel cycling in autumn.

Winter (December–February)

Prime for the desert, the Anti-Atlas and the Atlantic coast — mild days, cold nights, firm pistes. The high passes are snowed in, but the foothill valleys above Marrakech stay rideable. Read Morocco gravel cycling in winter.

Summer (June–August)

Only the High Atlas above 2,000 m, ridden at dawn — the desert and low valleys are dangerously hot. A narrow, specialist window. Read Morocco gravel cycling in summer.

Region-by-month matrix

The pass window

The high passes (Tizi n’Tichka 2,268 m, Tizi n’Test ~2,092 m) are rideable May–October. Snow closes them through winter, and in summer only the highest ground is comfortable, ridden early. The Atlas to Sahara Grand Tour runs in the shoulder seasons when both the pass and the desert work.

The desert window

The Sahara and Draa are prime October–March. Summer is dangerously hot and should be avoided. April–May is possible if you start very early. The Draa Valley Loop is the benchmark winter desert ride.

Choosing your dates

Start from where you want to ride, then find the month that works. If you are fixed on dates, find the region that works for them. The planning guide walks through the full decision tree, and how to plan your first Morocco gravel trip is the beginner version.
