Atlas Mountain Passes by Gravel Bike

The Atlas passes are the great objectives of Moroccan gravel — the points where the riding turns from valley rolling into real alpine climbing. Two passes matter for cyclists: the Tizi n’Tichka (2,268 m) and the Tizi n’Test (around 2,092 m). This is a pass-by-pass guide to riding them, with the elevation, the gearing and the season for each.

Why the passes matter

The Atlas passes are where the range is crossed — and where Moroccan gravel is at its most dramatic. They are the high points of the crossing routes, the biggest climbs, and the places where weather and altitude matter most. Tizi n’Tichka (2,268 m)

The highest vehicle pass in Morocco, on the Marrakech–Ouarzazate corridor. The Tizi n’Tichka Piste is 78 km with 1,450 m of climbing, graded challenging. The route runs from the pass summit down into the Ounila Valley toward Ait Benhaddou — the classic crossing. Tizi n’Test (~2,092 m)

The historic Marrakech–Souss trade route, quieter and wilder than the Tichka corridor. The Tizi n’Test Approach is 62 km with 1,300 m of climbing, graded challenging, running from Ouirgane up to the pass and down into the Souss toward Taroudant and the Anti-Atlas. Gearing

Low gearing is essential on both passes. The gravel climbs off the passes run 8% and more, sustained for kilometres. Season and weather

May–October is the safe window for both passes. Snow closes them through winter (December–February), and in summer only the highest ground is comfortable, ridden early. Always check the weather before a pass day — the exposed high ground can see wind, cold and sudden changes. Carry layers and ride with a support vehicle or a bailout plan.

Support

A support vehicle is recommended on both passes — it carries water and luggage and is your weather backup.
