Agafay Desert — A Gravel Cycling Guide
Agafay is the stone desert on Marrakech’s doorstep — a flat, arid plain of compacted earth and crushed stone about 30 km south of the city, with the Atlas wall on the horizon. It is the easiest proper gravel day you can ride from Marrakech, and a perfect first taste of Moroccan piste.
What Agafay is
Agafay is not a sand desert but a reg — a stone plain of compacted earth and crushed rock, dotted with argan and thorn. That makes it ideal gravel country: the surface is firm and fast, the going is flat to gently rolling, and there is almost no traffic. The Atlas rises immediately to the south, so the backdrop is dramatic even though the riding is easy.
The riding
The signature ride is the Agafay Desert Loop — roughly 35 km of rolling piste across the plain, with optional extensions toward the foothills. There is also the Agafay Sunset Ride for a shorter, late-afternoon spin. The surface is compacted earth and fine gravel throughout; a standard gravel bike on 40c tyres is perfect.
Difficulty and fitness
Easy. The climbing is minimal — a few short rollers — and the surface is forgiving. You need only basic gravel fitness: comfortable with 30–40 km on flat-to-rolling terrain. It is the ride we recommend to first-timers and to riders wanting a recovery day between harder efforts.

Season and weather
Agafay is rideable year-round because it is low and flat. Spring and autumn are ideal — warm but not hot, with clear Atlas views. Winter days are mild though mornings are cold. Summer is too hot by mid-morning; ride at dawn and be done by 10:00. There is no shade on the plain, so sun protection matters in every season.
Water and stops
Carry 2 L — there is no water on the plain itself. A few cafés and guesthouses sit on the Agafay fringe where you can stop after the ride. On a supported day the vehicle carries water and meets you at a set point.
